Overview

Privileged with 23 acres of real estate, the Sheraton Maui Resort has three of the best assets...location...location and location. With its own private cove, the setting is the envy of many other properties. The ambiance is old Hawaiian and the expanse of the grounds provides for a very uncrowded ambiance. The open layout of the property is a nice alternative to more modern high-rise properties on the islands. The property is located directly on Ka`anapali Beach home of one of the best snorkeling spots on Maui, Black Rock.

Ratan and teak furniture accentuate the public areas which are well laid out, open and bright. Because of the size of the grounds, be prepared to do some walking, particularly if your rooms are situated in the furthest reaches of the property.

The Rooms

The rooms in the Sheraton are especially well appointed with solid rattan furniture. The rooms are large and comforable, as is the bedding. Hawaiian motif prints and paintings are tastefully displayed on the wall, not for a moment looking like "hotel art." The baths are large with marble counters and standard amenities. There are several accommodation buildings across the property and it is difficult to say which of these is best. The view varies considerably from building to building. The Sheraton has 510 rooms and suites most with at least an ocean view with a private lanai. Building 6 is a favorite of many with its position property offering some of the best views. It is worthwhile spending time on the hotel website where excellent property maps permit closer examination of room locations.

The Staff

The Sheraton staff is very friendly, and go out of their way to make the guests feel at home or to rectify any problems.

Extras

The hotel's dining options are good enough to keep many guests at the hotel for all three meals for at least one day of a visit, but tend to the pricey side of the scale. In general Lahaina or Whaler's Village, a nearby shopping are, offer better dining values. Keka`a Terrace provides a full breakfast buffet , lunch and dinner. The Lagoon Bar offers a poolside grill menu and a Japanese restaurant, Teppanyaki Dan, provides a traditional steak and seafood menu.

The 142-yard freshwater swimming lagoon and whirlpool, accent the grounds. There are three night-lit tennis courts, a salon and day spa. Snorkeling is rather good right off of the beach, and scuba and boating are just some of the hotel's offerings. The Sheraton also sponsors a supervised children's activity center, tennis courts and a fitness center. The hotel's children's program provides a well orchestrated Hawaiian experience for young guests offering lei making, hula lessons and other crafts and activities. At night, the hotel sponsors a cliff diving exhibition into the surf. There is live music at practically all hours, and one does well to make sure that there are no performances or events planned adjacent to their chosen room during their stay as festivities sometimes go on into the latehours.

Note that the hotel charges an additional fee each day as a "resort fee" to cover internet access parking and other amenities.

Recommended

The Sheraton Maui Resort is a solid value and recommended for those travelers most comfortable with large, chain hotel surroundings and for families. Better choices exist for more intimate, romantic settings.
