[edit] Review
Otto is a pizzeria the way a Porche is a car. But this absolutely incredible restaurant is a no-miss recommendation in Manhattan. Great for lunch or dinner, the meals here are about exquisite taste, not volumes of food. Mario Batali heads up the partnership that launched Otto, and the pedigree of their previous efforts in dining at Esca, Babbo and Lupa is easily discernable. Though located on 5th avenue for purposes of the postal service, look for the front door on 8th Street (“Otto”, get it? That’s “eight” in Italian).
The menu is well laid out and not at all intimidating, although the fare is filled with cheeses, wines and meats fit for a connoisseur. Our recommendation? Try anything, everything. On repeat trips back to Otto, you will not be disappointed. The antipasti, bruchettas, cheeses and deserts are the highlights, however, and the wait staff more than eager to assist you with your selections. Oh, and Otto serves pizza, too. They are the real thing, as authentic as any you will find anywhere, but don’t be tempted to center the meal there. The desserts are all about cheeses with sweet fruits and gelato, with flavors that will embed themselves in your taste buds along with the rest of your meal like a nice dream.
Once you have been to Otto, you will return. It will become one of the arrows in your NYC dining quiver.
[edit] Ambiance
The ambiance is intimate and the noise level a bit on the loud side in the front of the restaurant, less so in the back. Definitely try everything already mentioned, and if you must go for pizza, and you want to try something most unusual, try the Lardo pizza.
The service is friendly and helpful, polite but not at all formal.
