[edit] Overview
It is seldom that one has the opportunity to visit a hotel that has no apparent faults. The InterContinental Amstel Amsterdam presents one such opportunity. The Amstel, a palace-style property on the banks of the Amstel River, is the finest in Amsterdam, and one of the finest in Europe. It is traditional, more sophisticated than formal, and not for everyone. But if you want a Five-Star experience, and are prepared to pay a $$$$$ price for the privilege, the Amstel is one of the best.
The exterior of the property dominates a quiet section of the Amstel River and is a point of interest for sightseeing boats on canal tours. The large, palatial facade is nothing short of eye-pleasing especially at night when lit by lights and reflected in the river. The two-story lobby offers many seating areas leading out to a domed observation lounge on the Amstel where tea, cocktails and other refreshments are served. The atmosphere is quiet but not hushed.
The hotel is somewhat further from the town center than most of the other properties in the city, but a walk to the hustle and bustle of the downtown area and Amsterdam Centraal Station are only a ten to twenty minute walk away through lovely streets and canals.
[edit] The Rooms
The 55 rooms and 24 suites are for the most part spacious, the suites especially so, with sitting areas in all and some including a small library- partioned off sleeping area and had separate bath, toilet and shower areas. The furnishings are antique and the prints on the wall are actual works of art. Soft, full carpet with wooden floor areas accent the rooms. The drapes and window treatments are plush. The baths are marble, brass and glass and beautiful, with robes, excellent towels, slippers and L'Occitane toiletries. Note that not all rooms are smoke-free, so be sure to specify a preference. The river views are the best, but the "Square Views" run a close second, particularly on either end of the building where the river is easily visible from the bedroom. Satellite TV, wireless internet service, multiple telephones, sound systems, minibars, in-room safe and a morning newspaper round out the amenities.
[edit] The Staff
The staff, more than two for every guest, is very, very well trained, polite and unobtrusive. Room service is 24/7. Housekeeping is superb with turndown service.
[edit] Extras
The La Rive restaurant sits on the river side of the hotel and sports tremendous views. The French cuisine offered is excellent with a wide selection of wines. An excellent buffet breakfast is likewise offered in La Rive as well. The Amstel Bar and Brasserie is open daily for lunch and dinner. The hotel's gym and health center include a small workout area and a rectangular indoor pool, a bit on the smaller side. Masseurs are available as are a sauna and a steam room.
[edit] Recommended
The Amstel Intercontinental is highly recommended for those who are looking for a first class experience and who are willing to pay for it.
